About this trip: Snow is a sure thing as the Hintertux Glacier is open for skiing 365 days a year. This is a joint trip with fellow Americans from Kaiserslautern.  The trip takes us to Hintertux were we will experience great year around glacier skiing plus more if the weather cooperates.  Hintertux is located in the Zillertal valley of Tyrol, Austria.  At the height of the ski season, the resort offers 225 km of pistes and 62 lifts.  This early in the season the area will probably be limited to between 12 and 21 lifts encumpassing up to 75 kms or runs.  The area has snow guns to add to skiing reliability.  There will be plenty of skiable terrain to shake out the cob webs, work on technique, and simply have a good old time.  The glacier area offers runs best tailored for semi-experienced beginners and intermediates.  Ski instruction is available and information can be found at the resort web site.  Even non-skiers will enjoy this weekend away from home.  The hotel is first rate offering great meals and spa opportunities.  Additionally, the area offers enjoyable casual hiking.

For the hard-core skiers there is the “glacier-tour” which offers 72 km of runs with at 15,000 meter difference in altitude.  Ski teams from more than two dozen nations train here before the competitive season starts.  A great place for you to learn or tune up too!

Hotel: We will be staying at the 3-star Gästehaus Eberl, an ideal base for those keen skiers amongst you and casual weekenders!  As you enter the hotel you will find the bar and lounge area retain the feel of a traditional Tirolean Inn while the bedrooms have been modernized to give a light, airy feel. The hotel also has an elegant dining room and a modern, spacious spa area with a swimming pool and a sauna, in which you can relax at the end of your day on the slopes. All bedrooms with private bath or shower, WC, cable TV, hairdryer (in main building), bathrobes and balcony. They serve a hot and cold breakfast buffet and a 4-course evening meal with choice of main course and daily salad buffet. They can be reached at +43-5285-62667.

Skiing: This is glacier skiing and all areas may not be open. The Austrian ski resort of Hintertux (in Tyrol) is part of the Zillertal Ski Area with access to 130 individual pistes. There are 22 lifts. These cover 23 km of black runs, 48 km of red runs, and 15 km of blue runs. (This area is not suitable for cross country skiing). In addition to the skiing in Hintertux itself (225km of prepared ski runs), the appropriate ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Zillertal ski resorts of Finkenberg, Fügen, Hippach, Kaltenbach, Mayrhofen and Zell am Ziller, if open.  With pistes between 2600 and 3200 meters at the glacier, skiing and snowboarding is assured throughout the season. Boarders will enjoy the Boarder Park.

Lift Passes: An adult 2-day lift pass is 75€, a youth pass is 60€, and a child pass is 34€. Prices are approximate.

Equipment Rental: Ski equipment rental is readily available at the resort but it is more expensive than renting through outdoor rec. Renting prior to departure may be more convenient for you. The TC is not responsible for equipment rental or sizing. The bus will not wait for those turning in equipment at the last minute; please plan accordingly.

Lessons: Lessons are available. Recommend referring to the tourist info web site for more information.

Departure: This is a shared trip with the K-town ski club. Note that there is no HISC Trip Captain (TC)  on the bus, and no food or drinks are provided.  The bus will depart PHV from the Commissary gate Park and Ride area.  That will simplify access control procedures since the bus will already have K-Town passengers on board.  Departure time is scheduled for 5 pm (17:00). Time adjustment may be made by the HISC trips manager based on coordination with the K-Town TC.  Time adjustments will be announced in advance. The bus ride is about 7 hours.  When paid in full, members may reserve/select their bus seat.  The bus waits for no one.  Check-in with the TC prior to 1645 or risk being assessed a 10€ penalty fee that will be used to support the trip party fund.  Special Note:  Please pack lightly, the bus has limited cargo carrying capacity.  Limit yourself to an overnight bag, ski boot bag, and skis. Thanks.

Return:We’ll leave Hintertux around 16:00.  Precise time will be announced at the hotel.  The K-town TC has the authority to adjust the departure time but will notify skiers the night before departure and again the morning of departure.  Estimated return to PHV NLT 23:00.

Enjoy the trip!
