About this trip: This trip is all about downhill skiing. Better get to the gym to get ready for this one---you’ll leave Friday evening and then have three days to ski Verbier, Portes du Soliel, and Crans Montana. Our HISC bus will take the group to the ski area each day. Verbier is only 20 minutes from Martigny and is known for its huge lift system and for some of the best skiing in Europe. Crans Montana, famous for its abundant sunshine, will help you put some color on your face. In the massive Portes du Soliel area you can ski into France and join fellow HISCers on the PDS trip for lunch before continuing your Safari back into Switzerland. Snow conditions should be extremely reliable during February and skiing should be great at all of these resorts. Trip Captain: Trip Opens: January 4 Final Payment Due: February 1 Trip Price: 250€, Single Supplement 70€. The trip is 3 nights (Friday - Monday) and the price includes transportation, room with bath or shower, 3 breakfasts, and 2 dinners. Hotel: We’re staying in the Hotel Forclaz Touring in the town of Martigny. This hotel was recently remodeled and has clean modern rooms. The hotel has a sauna, Turkish bath, restaurant, bar, and is centrally located within Martigny. HISC stayed at this hotel previously and our members were very pleased with the accommodations and meals. They can be reached at +41-27722-2701. Skiing: The Verbier ski area offers fantastic skiing with 150 runs (spread over 400 km worth of trails). These trails are connected by 100 lifts. Verbier is also noted for fantastic mogul skiing. Snow conditions should be excellent and you should be able to ski all the way down to the village of Verbier. Verbier is located in the “Four Valley” area of Switzerland and offers something for everyone, but caters especially to those looking for challenging slopes. At Portes du Soleil, you can find fantastic skiing in an area that stretches into neighboring France. This area advertises itself as the largest internationally connected ski resort in the world. PDS offers skiing in various resorts, with major ones being Champery and Les Crosets in Switzerland, and Avoriaz and Mozine in France. These areas offer Over 650 km worth of trails, with over 240 runs. The runs are 40% beginner, 40% intermediate, and 20% expert slopes and all should be open as we are skiing in peak ski season. Snowboarders can also find ample terrain to ply their trade and will enjoy the snow park in Avoriaz. In Crans-Montana, you will ski a resort famous for its sun-drenched slopes. High enough to have its own glacier, Crans literally sets the stage for a beautiful day of skiing. Arranged like a natural alpine amphitheatre, Crans Montana provides pure skiing and riding pleasure from the Cry d’Er to La Tièche, while providing the added bonus of perhaps the most spectacular view of the highest alpine ridge in Switzerland. Crans offers skiing over four different and distinct ski areas. Most runs are beginner and intermediate level and offer a variety of difficulty. These areas offer skiing on over 160 km worth of trails, and are connected by 41 lifts. Expert skiers can also find something to their likening, by taking the black runs off the La Toula lift or the black run off the Bella Lui peak. This trip is not suitable for cross country skiing. Lift Passes: The prices vary by ski area. Equipment Rental: Ski equipment rental is readily available at the resort but it is more expensive than renting through outdoor rec. Renting prior to departure may be more convenient for you. The TC is not responsible for equipment rental or sizing. The bus will not wait for those turning in equipment at the last minute; please plan accordingly. Lessons: Lessons are available. Recommend referring to the tourist info web site for more information. Departure: The bus will depart PHV from the Dental Clinic parking lot at 5 pm (17:00). The travel time is approximately 6 hours. When paid in full, members may reserve/select their bus seat. The bus waits for no one. Check-in with the TC prior to 16:45 or risk being assessed a 10€ penalty fee that will be used to support the trip party fund. Special Note: Please pack lightly, the bus has limited cargo carrying capacity. Limit yourself to an overnight bag, ski boot bag, and skis. Thanks. Return: The trip captain will notify skiers of the departure time the night before departure and again the morning of departure. Enjoy the trip! |
