Happy HISC New Year! The ski season is now kicking into high gear, and we have some exciting trips opening at our next Social, January 4, including our two President’s Weekend trips…PLEASE READ THIS SNOSHEET CAREFULLY, AS THERE ARE SEVERAL CHANGES TO THE INFORMATION POSTED ON THE WEBSITE! This SnoSheet contains the most up-to-date information: TRIPS OPENING JAN 4: Zell am See, Feb 17-20: This is a perennial favorite – we stay at the rustic Berghotel Schmittenhohe at the top of the mountain (2000m), so you can ski out your door before the lifts even open in the morning (just be sure you get back to the top before the lifts close in the afternoon or you may not be able to get back up to the hotel!). The views are spectacular. Zell is great for all abilities, with 55 lifts, 25 km of black runs, 49 km of red runs, and 56 km of blue runs. And the après ski scene at “Schnapps Hans” on the hotel terrace is always lively! NOTE: Because we have to get to the base station to catch the gondola before it closes on Friday night, we have to leave at 14:00 for this trip – no exceptions – plan accordingly. Ski Safari, Feb 17-20: This is a CHANGE from our original schedule. The hotel we booked at Bad Gastein changed management and was unable to honor our reservation, so we have substituted this trip instead. On this trip, we will have the flexibility to ski at 3 different areas (Portes du Soleil, Verbier, and Crans Montana), and we will stay in Martigny at the Hotel Forclaz Touring http://www.hotelforclaztouring.ch/index-UK.htm, about 45 minutes south of Lake Geneva. At 250 euro per person in a double (310 in a single), this is less expensive than Bad Gastein, so this is a great opportunity to ski all these places at a really good price. Rinnen Ski and Brewery Trip (Feb 10-12): This is a new one for HISC – we will stay at the Hotel-Gasthof Thaneller in Austria, not far from the Zugspitze. The nearby skiing possibilities include Berwang, Biblbach, Erwald, Bibewier, and Lermoos. Night life will include dinner at the brewery attached to the hotel, with live music. This is a crazy-good price – three nights for 120 euros (and no supplement for a single room!), 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners, and bus transportation. It’s the best deal of the season. TRIPS STILL AVAILABLE: Krippenstein, 3-5 February: We are extending the signup time for this trip to this week only – this is a new trip for HISC, and we’ve heard great things about it. We will ski at Krippenstein and Obertraun Dachstein with 20 lifts in 4 different ski areas. Krippenstein is quickly earning a reputation for great off-piste skiing and as a hot spot for the freeriding scene. It looks like a blast! Check it out at: http://www.krippenstein.com/en There are also 15km of cross country ski trails. This trip is priced at a very economical 180 euros, so take advantage of this great opportunity to ski one of the newest areas in the Alps, with an ultra-modern lift system. Portes du Soleil, 13-16 January: There are still a few spaces on the Portes du Soleil trip 13-16 January. This has always been a big HISC favorite - ski Switzerland AND France on the same trip. If you’ve already signed up for PDS, make your final payment on Wednesday and reserve your seat on the bus. JAN 4 THE SKI DOCTORS WILL BE IN! Our Ski Patrollers will be providing their excellent board and ski waxing and sharpening service at our next Social. OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE ON THE HISC COUNCIL FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2012: Regrettably, I am going to have to resign as HISC President at the Social on January 18, as I am PCSing in early February. I am truly sorry that I will not be able to serve the entire term – I did not anticipate this move when I accepted the position last March. But I’m moving to Hawaii, and even though the skiing is going to be awful, I’m pretty excited about it anyway. J BUT…now we need a couple volunteers to serve on the Council until May… If you are willing to serve on the Council but not necessarily in the President position, the position of VP Socials may be a possibility, and we are also looking for another “Member at Large”. The duties of these positions can be found on our website, in the bylaws: http://heidelbergski.com/AboutHISC/bylaws.htm These positions will be appointed and do not require a vote, so all we need is a couple folks to volunteer. In reality, most of the hard work for the season is done, the trips are planned, everything is running smoothly now that we’re halfway through the year…so it’s just a matter of keeping things on track. Council members will receive a 100 euro voucher for serving HISC for the remainder of the season. A new Council will be elected in March, to begin serving in May. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions. NEW YEAR’S WISHES! On behalf of your HISC council, we hope you have a year filled with good fortune, good health, and happy skiing! Let it snow! Susan Susan Bomier |
