Hello HISCers!

Well the Ground Hog was right!  Winter is baaaaaack!

Our cold and rainy weekend here in Heidelberg brought new snow to many places in the Alps yesterday and today.

After not getting any snow for a month at Chamonix a whole foot of it fell on us while we were at there last weekend and they also got a couple of inches at Zell in time for the last day.  Since then it has been cold and damp all over the Alps---perfect weather for us and a message to you that you must book one of our last four ski trips of the year!

Our SOCIAL on Wednesday 2 March will be a Mardi Gras Party---or Fasching if you prefer and have truly gone “native.”

There will be a COSTUME contest with prizes awarded to the best adult and kid costumes.   Even if you can’t do the costume thing at least be festive and wear the colors of the occasion --- purple, green and gold.

TRIP NEWS:

We have several great trips which will remain on sale sales this Wednesday Night:

Lauterbrunnen Switzerland 11-13 March.   It SNOWED there this weekend.  This trip has always been a sellout because it is a great bargain.   We stay in the valley right between two large and famous ski areas which are covered by the same ski pass.   High altitude of both skiing areas makes this a safe bet for March. One of the shortest bus rides of the season gets you to our quaint hotel surrounded by absolutely staggering scenery.  Sales for this trip close after the Social on Wednesday so this is your last chance to guarantee yourself a spot on this beauty.  Go for it!

Flims-Laax, Switzerland 25-27 March. A large area serviced by over two dozen lifts almost half of which are above 2,000 meters makes this a good bet for late spring skiing.  Flims-Laax is off the beaten track and doesn’t have a train station to bring in a bunch of weekenders—so the area is not crowded.  HISCers that took this trip last year never saw a lift line!   If you can ever find a better price for a weekend in Switzerland that includes all this trip has—take it, but since you won’t – then join us on this trip!

Zermatt, Switzerland 7-11 April. Take advantage of the No-School/Training Holiday and beginning of Spring Break combined and ski for FOUR days in one of Europe’s most famous destinations.  The Matterhorn is possibly the world’s most recognizable mountain peak and one place you must see while you’re here.  We know not everyone can take off the whole Spring Break week so here’s a great trip that will have you back in H-town Monday night.  A terrific trip for those who don’t ski too; Zermatt is an awesome town for hiking, sightseeing or just chillin’.

Val Thorens, France 9-16 April.  Ask anyone who has skied all over Europe the very best place to go and you’ll get the answer “Three Valley’s in France” more than any other.  Ski all six days and you still won’t cover it all.  This is a bus trip with family pricing.  You get a furnished apartment with a kitchen right on the slopes.  The ultimate ski-in, ski-out family vacation.

Ischgl, Austria 30 April-2 May. Opens for sales at the Social this Wednesday.  We really don’t need to advertise this trip since it is ALWAYS a first night sellout.  If you’re trying to decide how early to leave work to get in line for your space number here are a couple of things to consider: (1) our hotel is right in town in the middle of the party and (2) “The Killers” are the group that will be featured at the “top of the mountain” concert.

Of course WE WILL BE GIVING OUT NUMBERS IN THE LOBBY BEFORE THE SOCIAL to aid with crowd control and (hopefully) lessen stress and frustration for you and the Trip Captain.  If you get to the lobby before the numbers arrive please keep track of the order of the queue so we can fairly assign spaces when we arrive from our “day-jobs.”

CLUB BUSINESS:

HISC belongs to the members and whenever we want to make a change to our business practices you get the final say.  At the end of each year the Council takes a hard look at the Club Constitution and By-Laws and if appropriate makes recommendations on changes to them which are then approved or disapproved by the club members by a vote. We have a couple of recommendations we’ll be putting up for a vote at the Social on Wednesday.  I’ll send those to you in a supplemental SnoSheet within the next couple of days so you have time to think them over before then.

Lastly, you’ll elect your next year's council at the mid-March Social.  Please think about serving.  We can't run the club without a council and many of this year's council will not be returning next year.  Let your voice be heard! Benefits include 200E voucher toward trips, pre-signups for any trip (never wait in line again) and a chance to make a difference in our club.   Ask one of us and we'll help you find the right job for you.

Hope to see you Wednesday,

Barb
