Greetings all,

A full bus heads to Flims-Laax this weekend.  While weather does not appear particularly promising, we’re optimistic.  After all, the weather forecast for Lauterbrunnen was not particularly good yet it turned out to be one of those knock-the-socks-off weekends…one you live for.  So we shall see.

Wednesday’s social theme is Wild West, so come on out in your foot stomp’in garb…ten gallon hat and all…check the weapons at the reception table.

It is my great honor to introduce your 2010-2011 elected HISC Council officials.  Our leaders for next year are:

President – Barb Ellis

Trips Manager – Dave Ellis

Socials – Dorian Bozza

Publicity – Mickey Miller

Membership – Aleck Hernandez

Secretary – Gerry Gerbereux

Gear Shop – Terri Moser

Treasurer – Bryan Longmuir

This is truly a talented team who will continue to build on the past.  The Club is lucky to have this very conscientious people and fun focused team leading the Club next year.

This time each year we review the HISC Constitution and By-Laws to see if it remains relevant and meets the needs of membership and council management.  Both documents can be found on the HISC web site at www.Heidelbergski.com.  Please take time to review these two important documents and bring your recommended changes to the 31 March social.  This social will be the last opportunity to recommend Constitution/By-Law changes this ski year. Jot down the current verbiage, proposed verbiage, and rational for change and submit your proposal(s) to Judy at the hospitality table.

Trip Captains

Please return your TC materials to Linnea if your trip has concluded.  Of note, we are in dire need of trip SAF forms so please return those soonest.

Refunds:

Our fiscal year financial records will close mid-April and then there will be an audit shortly thereafter.  We are in the process of wrapping up refund reviews through the Flims-Laax trip.  Please petition the council by 2 April should you believe you deserve a refund and think you have been overlooked during the course of the year. Provide sufficient information about the circumstances of the cancellation so that the Council can make an informed refund decision. The Council will review the case at the 7 April Council meeting.  Note: I’ve been listing the names of those members receiving refunds in the refund paragraph of the SnoSheet.  Past SnoSheets are available on the Club’s website should you want to double check to see if you are a refund recipient before going through the effort of preparing a petition.

The following members may contact Doug Sims to receive refunds/vouchers that were ruled upon at the 24 March Council meeting:

Refunds –

Bill Williams and family, Mike Phillips, Linnea Norby, Ken Reese, Brian Hughes (2), Mickey Miller, Meg Cambon, Nina Staiano, Riley Smith, Jenny Bumgardner.

Vouchers –

Don Sibitzky, Rose Marie Smith

Trips:

Val Thoren (3-10 April, bus; 10-17 April, U-drive)

This week long vacation is a shared event with multiple U.S. ski clubs in Germany.  Scherer Tours is our gracious host.  Price varies based on the accommodation one chooses.  This is a great outing to team up with other singles, couples or families to find the most cost efficient billeting arrangement.  Val Thorens is the highest purpose built ski village in France’s Three Valley’s – the largest ski area in the world.  Many of you may question the quality of skiing in mid-April.  If my memory serves me correctly, other than glacier locations, Val Thorens is the last ski resort in Europe to close each year.  People have returned from the trip raving about the great ski conditions.  I’ve seen photos and video clips from trip participants attesting to the snow quality. This will be a great spring break outing.

Ischgl (TC:John and Maritza Taylor) – Wait List Only

This is the first time we’ve been able to offer this trip with accommodations in Ischgl.  We can thank John and Maritza for that.  This is our end-of-season ski weekend bash.  It’s about the “happening” more than about the skiing.  Skiing is normally good until about 1300 each day at which time the snow begins getting pretty slushy.  While the skiing can be fun – fabulous ski area – most go for the sun, the Saturday concert on the slopes, and the continuous party in town.  Alica Keyes, the featured artist for the weekend, will add to the quality of the weekend.  Please note that the bus departure is 1200 on Friday.  This early departure gets us to Ischgl in time for dinner and the pre-concert festivities in town.  Non-skiers can access the concert on the slope.

Danube Bike Trip (TC: Mike Wiederich) (28-31 May) Wait List Only.

This is a great bike outing along the Donau River virtually flat bike trail.  Friday after work bikes are loaded on the bus bike trailer and baggage is tossed under the bus.  We spend Friday night at a village near Passau.  The next morning, bags are loaded on the bus and bikes are off-loaded from the trailer.  We then head out on a leisurely bike adventure arriving at the hotel later in the day where baggage awaits our arrival.  This process is repeated on Sunday and Monday. On Monday we reach Grein – about 150 km from our start point – board our bus and return to Heidelberg reaching our destination at about 2200-2300.  Each day’s adventure is tailorable to the interests of your group.  Maps are provided.  Extended bike routes or truncated bike routes can be taken each day; in essence, there is a lot of flexibility in the daily schedule.  This is a great family outing along a very scenic stretch of the Donau.

St. Veit Golf (TC:  Leslie Mehall) (28-31 May)

This is a U-drive to the scenic area of St. Veit.  Trip participants will enjoy golf outings at three different golf resorts.  Each course is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and crystal clear air.  Add a day to or from St. Veit and enjoy the nearby sites of Salzburg or Berchtesgarden.  Reminder:  Non-HISC members may accompany us on the trip.  These individuals will pay the cost of the trip plus a 10E guest fee in lieu of having to join the club for 20E, 40E, or 45E.  So invite your friends and introduce them to the club and the beauty of Austria.

Look forward to seeing you Wednesday evening.

Please, just a little more snow…in the Alps

See you on the high ground.

Regards,

Al Rasper
2009-2010 HISC President
