Greetings all,

A full bus heads to Lauterbrunnen this weekend.  Weather appears promising.  Next trip is Flims-Laax; space is available.

Wednesday’s social theme is St. Patrick’s Day…come in green; we’ll find some green beer and listen to Irish music.  Enjoy participating in the raffles.

Sometime between sipping the green adult beverage and listening to the Irish tunes, we’ll conduct our 2010-2011 HISC Council elections.  We have a great slate that will continue to make HISC the social and trip club of choice in the Heidelberg area.

Our candidates are:

President – Barb Ellis

Trips Manager – Dave Ellis

Socials – Dorian Bozza

Publicity – Mickey Miller

Membership – Aleck Hernandez

Secretary – Gerry Gerbereux

Gear Shop – Terri Moser

Treasurer – Bryan Longmuir

You will have the opportunity to vote for these candidates or you may choose to insert a write-in candidate.

This time each year we review the HISC Constitution and By-Laws to see if it remains relevant and meets the needs of membership and council management.  They can be found on our HISC web site at www.Heidelbergski.com.  Please take the time to review these two important documents and notify a council member if you wish to submit a Constitution or By-Law amendment.  Identify current verbiage, proposed verbiage, and rational for change when submitting a proposed change.  Membership will vote on proposals at the 31 March social.

Refunds:

Trip refunds have been partially reconciled through Engelberg.  The following can contact Doug Sims for refunds:

Zell:  Mickey and Andrew Miller, Ellen Santaliz, Patrick McKenzie.

Ski Safari:  Brian McDonald

We have one deferred action for Engelberg and two for Zell.

Trips:

Two Memorial Day weekend trips go on sale at this social.  One is for bike enthusiasts and the other is for golfers.  Given these are our final trips of the year, we’re going to make a special offer for your close non-HISC member friends.  Only HISC members are eligible to sign up for these two trips the first night – Wednesday night.  After Wednesday night, we are opening the trips to community members at large.  Non-HISC members may accompany us on the trip.  These individuals will pay the cost of the trip plus a 10E guest fee in lieu of having to join the club for 20E, 40E, or 45E.  So invite your friends on one of the trips and introduce them to the club and the beauty of Austria.

Danube Bike Trip (TC: Mike Wiederich) (28-31 May)

This is a great bike outing along the Donau River virtually flat bike trail.  Friday after work bikes are loaded on the bus bike trailer and baggage is tossed under the bus.  We spend Friday night at a village near Passau.  The next morning, bags are loaded on the bus and bikes are off-loaded from the trailer.  We then head out on a leisurely bike adventure arriving at the hotel later in the day where baggage awaits our arrival.  This process is repeated on Sunday and Monday. On Monday we reach Grein – about 150 km from our start point – board our bus and return to Heidelberg reaching our destination at about 2200-2300.  Each day’s adventure is tailorable to the interests of your group.  Maps are provided.  Extended bike routes or truncated bike routes can be taken each day; in essence, there is a lot of flexibility in the daily schedule.  This is a great family outing along a very scenic stretch of the Donau.

St. Veit Golf (TC:  Leslie Mehal and Cindy Beard) (28-31 May)

This is a U-drive to the scenic area of St. Veit.  Trip participants will enjoy golf outings at three different golf resorts.  Each course is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and crystal clear air.  Add a day to or from St. Veit and enjoy the nearby sites of Salzburg or Berchtesgarden.

Flims-Laax (TC:Shash Chitnis)

This is the cheapest trip of the year yet a very good ski area with a hotel that is within walking distance of the gondola that transports skiers to beautiful skiing primarily above the tree line.  So how did we make this trip so cheap?  Well, we’re experimenting.  This is HISC’s version of Ryannair – stripped down.  Your trip cost does not include food and beverages on the bus and Saturday night dinner.  This affords you an opportunity to experiment with eating out and deciding whether you wish to package your own treats for the bus ride or rely on food and beverages at the mid-route rest stop.  Flims-Laxx has extensive (220 km) and varied slopes that are ideal for intermediates.  The lift system moves skiers quickly.  The area is considered a snowboard hot spot.  The terrain parks are some of the best in Europe.

Val Thoren

This week long vacation is a shared event with multiple U.S. ski clubs in Germany.  Scherer Tours is our gracious host.  Participants are picked-up at the Commissary Gate Park and Ride.  Price varies based on the accommodation one chooses.  This is a great outing to team up with other singles, couples or families to find the most cost efficient billeting arrangement.  Val Thorens is the highest purpose built ski village in France’s Three Valley’s – the largest ski area in the world.  Many of you may question the quality of skiing in mid-April.  If my memory serves me correctly, other than glacier locations, Val Thorens is the last ski resort in Europe to close each year.  People have returned from the trip raving about the great ski conditions.  I’ve seen photos and video clips from trip participants attesting to the snow quality.  John Schwartz of Scherer Tours will attend a social in the near future to provide you photo evidence of the quality of skiing at Val Thorens in April.  This will be a great spring break outing.

Ischgl (TC:John and Maritza Taylor) – Sold Out but maintaining a wait list.

This is the first time we’ve been able to offer this trip with accommodations in Ischgl.  We can thank John and Maritza for that.  This is our end-of-season ski weekend bash.  It’s about the “happening” more than about the skiing.  Skiing is normally good until about 1300 each day at which time the snow begins getting pretty slushy.  While the skiing can be fun – fabulous ski area – most go for the sun, the Saturday concert on the slopes, and the continuous party in town.  Alica Keyes, the featured artist for the weekend, will add to the quality of the weekend.  Please note that the bus departure is 1200 on Friday.  This early departure gets us to Ischgl in time for dinner and the pre-concert festivities in town.  Non-skiers can access the concert on the slope.

Look forward to seeing you Wednesday evening.

This is going to be a late ski season so take advantage of these remaining ski trips.  All are at good elevations.

Let it Snow…in the Alps

See you on the high ground.

Al Rasper
