Greetings Fellow HISC’ers, We’re looking forward to bringing you another fun filled social on the 28th. You may not like to ski but I’m sure you don’t mind tipping a glass of wine every now and again and again and again. The 28 Oct Social is double the fun. Our theme will be wine tasting in a ghoulish manner. You say “What?” Well, the social will include a special wine-tasting event and best dressed in the spirit of Halloween competition. While hosting Jonathan Chiri, a French chef and wine expert from Domaine & Traditions, we’ll also recognize our ‘best dressed’ club members. Mr. Chiri will offer a selection of fine French wines for sampling and, of course, buying. I understand the wine prices will range from the 6 ish euro to low 30 ish euro range. This will be a delight for the wine connoisseurs among you. There is no obligation to buy. It’s time to pull out the ol’seasonal costume attire or let the creative juices flow to create something new and special. See who you can out do in the costume department. The HISC social costume can be a trial run before you mix it up with the public downtown on Saturday the 31st – Halloween Night. As in the past, you’ll be certain to see a wide assortment of get-ups strolling the fussgangerzone and bar hoping Saturday night. In fact, come to the social to organize your own trick-or-treat outing Saturday evening. Terri will display new HISC Gear Shop merchandise Wednesday night. Begin thinking about Christmas presents. I’m sure college age students will proudly enjoy wearing their HISC apparel while mingling at various college social events (that’s between studying reeeeal hard – Mom and Dad). Could be a good date picker upper…hey, where is Heidelberg and what is an “Alps”? A number of people have volunteered to serve as Trip Captain which the council and membership greatly appreciate. The TC line-up is as follows:
Please advise if someone was erroneously identified as a TC so that we can quickly correct the error and find a new TC. Thanks. Now to serious business…trips… Hintertux (6-8 Nov) closes on Wednesday. No more procrastinating. Reminder, it’s a co-trip with K-Town. Ski reports indicate 24% of the slopes are open with 381 cm of snow at the upper elevations and 76 cm at the lower elevations. Current conditions are powder with more snow inbound. Sounding mighty good for mid-October. Please pay in full by the conclusion of the 28 Oct social. Oburgurgl (25-29 Nov) at Thanksgiving still has space. The distance from the hotel to the lift is the shortest you’ll experience all year…50 meters. The hotel is 4-star and offers plenty of amenities. The food is fabulous…and turkey for Thanksgiving. Start your après ski season at the best place possible, the Nederhutte. Accompany Fred on an after hours bar hopping expedition…he knows the right places…learn Austrian drinking games. You don’t need to be a skier to enjoy this weekend away from home. Arraba (12-19 Dec/19-26 Dec/tailorable) still has potential opportunities. Mag (Malita) has one definite room available and she may be able to get an additional room or two. Dave (Evaldo) can potentially get one or possibly more apartments which are a little less costly but require a relatively short stroll to the hotel for meals. There is a catch in both cases, appears you can only book between 20-26 Dec as the 19th is completely sold out. If you are vacillating, be sure to talk to Dave and/or Mag at the social. You won’t regret this Christmas holiday, except, possibly, when you climb on the scales upon returning home. The dining room laughter and on-the-slopes camaraderie says it all. Each day is an adventure to a new scenic destination. Some return from CONUS just for this trip…it’s that good. Santa will pay us a visit…if all are good. And HISC will host our traditional gift exchange which normally produces some outrageous gifts and many laughts. Seigi told you the St. Veit (20-26 Dec) red-white-red story last meeting. This is truly a best value trip…U-drive, ski lessons included, structured to easily accommodate families with children, best way to learn to ski or improve your skiing ability, and great Austrian ambiance during a special time of the year…and don’t worry, Mom and Dad can provide Santa a forwarding address. The non-skier in the family can be pampered by an absolutely delightful spa package. Children eat lunch with their class affording quality children time and separate quality adult time. Reunite the family after daily lessons and enjoy horse drawn sleigh rides in falling snow or Seigi evening entertainment and games. Singles and couples will find the trip rich in fun, experiences, and ambiance, as well. This trip will be a special memory in your photograph book. Stuben (10/11-13 Dec) is our new trip offering this week. Last SnoSheet provided you with highlights. Stuben offers a captivating blend of reliable snow and village charm and it’s just a short 4.5 hour, predominately autobahn, drive away…with no mountain passes to worry about. Stuben is a small, unspoiled, charming Alpine village and the hotel is no different. Situated right in the middle of the Arlberg with easy lift access to St. Christoph, St. Anton, Zurs or Lech…or simply ski the slopes of Stuben. You can customize the trip to arrive either Thursday or Friday. The warmth of the hotel will make you feel real cozy and the ski slopes will pump your heart with joy. I know this trip is close to the holiday season but if you have use or loose leave you won’t find a better place to spend your time and you’ll receive early season reduced prices. Great skiing, delicious food, tremendous ambiance. Looking to our 11 Nov gathering, you’ll note that Portes du Soleil and Kitzbuhel (MLK Weekend) go on sale. Start looking at your trip wishes and your finances now. These two trips are typically sell outs with waiting lists. Opening night is sometimes a zoo so begin your decision making now. The early bird gets the worm…and a seat on the bus. More on these two destinations in the next SnoSheet. Another 11 Nov social highlight is our “bring a friend” offering. Each member may bring a non-HISC member friend and that friend receives a complimentary drink just as is offered to members. So you have between now and 11 Nov to conduct a lottery among your many cherished friends to identify the lucky one or reenergize your friend making skills to find a friend willing to be seen with you in public. In either case, the best way to enjoy a club with friends is to introduce friends to the club. Looking forward to seeing you Wednesday evening in your Halloween best. Please share this note and the attached flyer with your friends and post the flyer around the office. Thanks. Think snow…in the Alps. ‘Til Wednesday… Al Rasper |
