Greetings Fellow HISC Members,

Thanks goes out to Susan Wheeler for being such a grand host on our recently completed Cannstatter Fest outing.  I’ve received an overwhelming number of comments to repeat the event again next year but to depart PHV P&R a little earlier so that participants can roam the fair grounds prior to entering the ‘big top’ for an afternoon and evening of festing.

I must say, with all the rain this weekend, it’s probably a good thing we cancelled the Edersee Trip.  Those on the trip would have looked like wet rag dolls biking, golfing, and hiking.  Miserable; not at all fun.  Ah, but all is not lost.  I let my fingers carry me to the snow report web site j2ski.com to see what was happening south of the border.  I figured if it’s raining here maybe some goodness is falling from the sky at upper elevations south of here.  I have good news to report.  The snow line at Hintertux is forecasted at 1300m with 14 cm of snow forecasted in the next 48 hours and a total of 29cm forecasted between Monday and Friday.  Similarily, Oburgurgl is forecast to receive 23 cm at village level between Monday and Friday.  Let it SNOW!

It’s time to pull the gear out of the closet and inspect it for wearability and skiability.  HISC Gear Shop stands ready to help meet your apparel needs – more new items have been ordered.  While you’re checking the fitness of your clothing and equipment, don’t forget your personal fitness…keep working on your core and legs.  I have reports that Don, the man of leisure these days, is frequenting the gym regularly to prepare himself for an aggressive ski season to make up for last year’s limited ski days.

Wednesday’s social will be a happening scene.  Two great events are planned.  First, it’s sports apparel night.  Wear your favorite sport, team or sports figure apparel.  Since this is a family event, please wear something more than a Brett Favre jock strap.  If that’s all you have, please see Terri at the Gear Shop.  Sports games and trivia quizzes will be played with the opportunity to win a forever cherished prize.  Second, Seigi of Seigi Tours fame will attend Wednesday’s social to answer the many questions you may have about a Seigi Ski Week.  More on this in a moment.  For the old timers, I’ll do my best to exercise my “hook” authorities at the 15-20 min mark…please be patient.

Now to the trips…

Hintertux – 6-8 Nov; bus trip.  Space is available and the skiing will be fine.  The glacier skiing is year around and the pending snow will likely afford skiers some additional ski opportunities.  This is a joint trip with K-Town.  There may be a few Frankfurt skiers as well.  One reminder.  Please bring your own food and beverages for the bus trip because the trip is priced without Club sponsored food or drinks.

Obergurgl – 25-29 Nov; bus trip.  No need to further procrastinate on this trip.  Space is available and snow will be falling this week.  The renovated hotel is super nice, the lift is 50m away, and the apres ski is hard to beat.  Let the hotel worry about fixing your Tom Turkey…no need to slave away in the kitchen when you can be carving S-turns in the white stuff.  This time of year – no crowds…except at the Nederhutte, the place to be Friday and Saturday after a day on the slopes.

Stuben – 10/11-13 Dec, U-drive.  Opens next social – 28 Oct.  Begin thinking about this one.  Some may call this the boutique trip of the year.  Stuben is a one street Tirolean village right smack in the middle of the Arlberg.  Ski one direction to Zurs and Lech.  Ski another direction to St. Anton and St. Christoph.  Or simply ski Stuben.  The hotel – the Mondschein – is about 75m from the lift that connects you to a universe of enjoyable skiing.  The town is charming.  The hotel proprietor and his wife are a pleasure.  The food is great and plentiful.  The crackling fire in the cozy lobby area adds charm.  Some in the club have conducted extensive eye lid maintenance between after dinner drinks lounging in the over stuffed chairs around the fire.  This is an old world charm with modern hotel amenities experience.  All this and an easy 4.5 hour drive away with no harrowing passes to negotiate and almost all autobahn.  For those with a real life of leisure, try this trip and then drive on to Arabba for an extended ski vacation.

Arabba – 12-26 Dec, Evaldo and Malita, U-drive.  One room remains available at the Malita.  That said, we have no one on our wait lists so you’re not locked out of the trip yet if you are still interested in going.  We’re early in the sign-up cycle meaning that events may occur between now and mid-December requiring some to alter their plans thus generating openings.

Seigi’s St. Veit Ski Week – 20-26 Dec. U-drive.  Opens this social.  Seigi will market his ski week to you this coming Wednesday – slide presentation.  As old timers know, he is a bit long winded so please bear with him.  He has an absolute passion for the product he offers.  I’ll try to use the ol’hook at an appropriate time if the session drags out a bit.  All that said, let me tell you, he does offer a good product and it is very good value.  Over the years, many HISC members have learned to ski or improve their skiing ability through Seigi’s program.  All have been exceptionally pleased.  I’ve never heard of a complaint.  Seigi’s is about the total package – cost, easy drive, family oriented events in the evening, English speaking instructors, ski groups organized by ability, and non-ski spa options for the non-skier in the family.  If you haven’t been on skis in years, this is the trip to get your ski legs back.  If you want to get your youngster interested in skiing, this is the trip.  If your ski techniques have plateaued and you’re trying to move to the next level, this experience will do it for you.  If you want to have an absolutely pleasant winter wonderland tailorable family Christmas experience at a reasonable cost, this is the trip.  As a side no te, if Christmas week doesn’t work for you, we can help coordinate an alternative Sunday to Saturday vacation date.  Chat with Seigi before and after his presentation to get all your personal questions answered.  He is very accommodating.

Well I’ve probably taken up too much of your valuable time babbling so will sign off here.  The HISC Council remains committed to serving you – the membership.  See you Wednesday.

Let it snow…in the Alps.

Til’ next time.
