***HEIDELBERG INTERNATIONAL SKI CLUB SNOSHEET***

Fellow HISC Members,

Greetings one and all…Judy and I have returned from CONUS leave and TDY and look forward to seeing you at Wednesday’s social where we will celebrate Oktoberfest and New Year’s Eve (year-end budget closeout)…event attire (beer drinking or accountant) is encouraged.

By all accounts, the Bad Durkheim fest outing was a great success.  Thanks to Mag for hosting this annual event.

A highlight for this coming Wednesday’s social is the distribution of the 2009-2010 Ski Guide.  We have them in our possession…no more SNAFUs at the printer.  A hearty thanks goes to Barb Ellis and John Taylor, with behind the scenes support from several others, in assembling this year’s publication.

Obergurgl sales open Wednesday night.  We seek a TC so if you are interested please let Linnea Norby, John Taylor and/or I know.  This is really our first big trip of the season.  Several points about the trip:

  • It is a bus trip.
  • Historically, we have conducted two trips Thanksgiving weekend – Obergurgl and Zermatt.  This year, however, the Council decided to schedule only one trip as we were concerned about the availability of personnel given the ongoing V Corps/HQUSAREUR Afghanistan deployment and several stationing/reorganization actions which result in Heidelberg/Mannheim population reductions.  We selected Obergurgl over Zermatt for four reasons – historical snow reliability, cost, travel time, and logistics convenience to the traveler.
  • If the Obergurgl trip sells out and we have a sufficiently long stand-by list, we will contact the tour operator about getting a second bus.  So, if you want to go but the trip is sold out, don’t hesitate to place your name on the stand-by list so that we can accurately quantify the number of interested parties we must still try to accommodate.
  • Once again, the ever popular Nederhutte opens this weekend and will undoubtedly be rocking.  One publication I possess ranks the Nederhutte twelfth for European Apres Ski.  It’s a must experience if you have not had the opportunity…great music and plenty of singing and dancing, even from the rafters.
  • The hotel is the Sportiv which is really the fully renovated Deutschmann for you old timers.  The hotel is immediately adjacent to the gondola.  Great amenities throughout.  Expect a grand Thanksgiving meal.

Trips still selling Wednesday evening include Hintertux, (6-8 Nov) and Arabba (12-26 Dec).  Get your ski legs back with Hintertux…it’ll serve as a good loosening up weekend.

The social on 14 Oct will be important for those of you still considering your Christmas options and looking to learn how to ski or to improve your skiing.  Seigi of Seigi Tours fame will be our featured guest for the evening.  For about 20 minutes, he will share with you what the Seigi Ski experience has to offer.  This Christmas trip is truly best value.  At the conclusion of the week the non-skier will be a skier and the skier will be an improved skier.  Instruction is in English adding to the enjoyment of the learning experience.  Sometimes a family member has no interest in skiing.  Seigi can coordinate a very elaborate spa experience to pamper the non-skier.  The evening organized events are memorable and an optional horse drawn sleigh ride is available.  Children and adults, alike, will cherish the week experience.  This will be a Christmas vacation you will always remember.  Come to the 14 Oct social to hear about the Seigi Tours experience.

As mentioned above, we are still looking for TCs for several trips.  We’ll post the TC slating and vacancies at Wednesday’s social.  As a reminder, the following are TC perks:

  1. Early trip sign-up benefits during the period for which you are performing TC duties…trip opening to trip conclusion.
  2. Trip expenses for the trip you are sponsoring are waived – bus transportation, ski lift pass, and room and board at the shared room rate.  Meal and beverage costs and other personal expenses not included in the Club’s fee are still paid by the individual.

Visit your very own HISC Gear Shop at the next social.  Terri and Barb have ordered some great looking ‘stuff’.  The more you buy, the more we’ll rotate the stock and styles.

I've attached a flyer that can be posted around your office area to advertise the Club and its activities.  Spread the word; bring a friend to a social.

See you Wednesday evening.

Regards,

Al
