September 6, 2009 ***HEIDELBERG INTERNATIONAL SKI CLUB SNOSHEET*** Fellow HISC Members, I would like to report that we have begun the HISC year with a number of resounding successes. Of note:
These are very positive developments. You serve as the Club’s best ambassador for recruitment. Please continue to spread the word. Share with others that we are more than just a ski club as evidenced by the fest, bike, and golf outings that are on our schedule. Also, we offer trips with ski lessons for those contemplating tackling the slippery slopes for the first time. As I’ve mentioned before, volunteer contributions by Club members is essential to making the Club a success. In addition to the heavy lifting performed by the Council to make the picnic and the cruise a success, I’d like to thank the following for their much appreciated support during these events…you all really made a difference. Thanks. Hope I haven’t left anyone out.
Mag McGinley (Bad Durkheim) and Susan Wheeler (Stuttgart) are maintaining wait lists for their two fest trips. I would encourage you to contact Mag and Susan if you are interested in participating in one of these trips. Our first social is 16 September at the Zagreb. The Council is looking forward to hosting you at this first Wednesday night gathering. The following trips will be on sale at the Social:
Let me offer several comments about each of these trips. Edersee – This is the first time we have offered this trip. We really think it has something to offer for everyone. Edersee is a short 3.5 hour drive from Heidelberg. The trip is really tailorable to your personal interests. The bus will have a bike trailer so that you can load up the family bikes and spend a leisurely weekend biking the surrounding area on numerous bike paths. Additionally, golfers can take their clubs and play at one of several local golf clubs – one which requires a handicap and the other which does not require a handicap. I understand numerous inline and Nordic skaters also enjoy the area because of the number of surfaced paths one can enjoy while not competing with highway traffic. The lake offers many boating and sailing opportunities. Finally, for those interested, an aerial rope obstacle course outing will be offered. The trip price varies based on how you want to tailor your weekend. The price generally ranges between 265 and 385 euros. So far, four families/couples have signed up for the trip. We will have to make reservation deposit decisions on 17 or 18 Sept so I strongly encourage you not to procrastinate on deciding whether or not to participate in the trip. We think it will be a great trip. We know it competes against the Heidelberg Bazaar but those bazaar shopaholics among yo u can still find treasures at the other sup er size bazaar – Ramstein, which is just up the highway. Please notify John Taylor, our Trips Manager, prior to the 16th if you are interested in the trip but you are unable to attend the 16 Sept social. John can be reached at johnr.taylor@us.army.mil or tripsmanager@heidelbergski.com. We want to make a sound scheduling and deposit decision. To do so, we really need your early commitment to this trip. Hintertux – This will be a partner trip with K-Town. It’ll be a great opportunity to meet fellow skiers from one of our partner communities. I suspect it will be a heavy singles and young couples outing. As most of you know, Hintertux offers great early season skiing. Arabba – Arabba really needs no introduction. It is the one trip that will offer lasting memories. Food and après ski are out of this world – leave the scales at home, bring the expando pants. Scenery is phenomenal. The Club Christmas party is a hoot. Plenty of great ski partners; find your group – speed demon, leisure, destination, exploration. And did I mention the snow? Not to worry…incredible snow making capability…and last year there was more than plenty of the ‘real’ stuff…and blue skies most every day. Not a skier? Check out the spa and daily activities offered at the Evaldo. The number of repeat participants says it all. During the social, I encourage you to peruse the HISC Gear Shop inventory. Terri and Barb have ordered colorful and stylish merchandise with HISC logo from Land’s End. Please let Linnea Norby know about your interest in serving as a Trip Captain. She can be reached at linnea.norby@us.army.mil or tcmanager@heidelbergski.com. As you fully appreciate, the TC is key to a trip’s success. Membership fully appreciates the contributions made by the TC. We have recently upgraded our website at www.heidelbergski.com. It’s really looking good thanks to Nanci McGonigal. If you haven’t visited the site in a while, please do so. It has up-to-date information about the club, our trips and social events. The homepage will tell you when the next social will be held and what trips are open. Inside are pages about many of the clubs policies and procedures, trip details, HISC Gear Shop merchandise prices, links to hotels and resorts, and lots of other useful and fun information. There is also a photo gallery with pictures from some of last season’s trips. Explore the site today! Judy and I will be in the States during the first HISC social so John Taylor and Mickey Miller will facilitate the evening’s activities and they’ll fill you in on the year’s activities. Again, welcome to another great year of fun and fellowship with HISC. Begin your snow dance rehearsals…soon you’ll want to conduct snow dances in hopes of encouraging the temperature and precipitation to cooperate in producing a winter wonderland we can all enjoy. Don’t forget to begin the ol’exercise routine – legs and core. Two months and counting. Cheers… Al |
